Transition

Community colleges are great institutions and can provide amazing opportunities. They also can become an abyss where students get caught in taking lots of unnecessary courses. Dr. Tammy has served as a professor and administrator at the community college level, and she has helped many students navigate and take advantage of great things community colleges have to offer. She has advised students on how to take relevant coursework and utilize resources. She has also made students aware of the community college trap: An Associates Degree is not required to transfer to a 4-year university. The demonstrated ability to do coursework at the college level is what is required (the caveat being the better the grades, the better the transfer options. This has saved students valuable time to apply to transfer earlier, which results in saving a lot of money (which is counterintuitive when the cost per unit at the community college). Most students don’t understand that a community college offers very few courses that transfer to upper division courses that are required for an undergraduate major. While the low cost per unit is an attractive option, it can unfortunately become money wasted as courses are taken unnecessarily that do not transfer.

Don’t love your career choice? Sometimes it’s easier to know what we don’t want to do rather than what we want to do. Additional education can be a great option to make a pivot. Does it have to be a new undergraduate degree or a graduate degree? Maybe or maybe not. Dr. Tammy has guided myriad students to find options for creative solutions to making a career pivot. Once you have an undergraduate degree, you have a lot of options. For example, you could go to an extension program to get a certificate, transfer internally in your current company, or go to graduate school. With Dr. Tammy’s multifaceted background in many different private industry roles and industries, she has many success stories that range from clients finding a new position within their company to assisting them with graduate school applications Dr. Tammy has worked with students who have gained acceptance to top 4-year colleges such as UCLA and USC. She realistically sets expectations and finds creative solutions that fit each individual client.
