Reflection
One important key to a successful career is identifying something you enjoy doing and something that you are good at. Dr. Tammy’s Pathways approach starts with the Reflection Pathway where students identify their personal interests and strengths, and then explore how this can potentially lead to a more meaningful choice of college major and future career.
In Dr. Tammy’s experience, there are many parents who think that college now is like it was when they were in college. However, this is not the case. College administrators drive enrollment through the creation of new college degree programs at the both community college and 4-year college levels. For example, at Dr. Tammy’s undergraduate alma mater there were 64 undergraduate degree programs when she went to college and there are 276 today. This increase in the number of majors, most especially majors that do not lead to meaningful employment, drives the need for assistance when choosing a college major.
Many students have no idea of what to choose as a college major. And the majority of students do not truly understand how a college major leads to a career. They seek advice from friends, teachers, guidance counselors, and their parents. And sometimes they also receive unsolicited advice from well-intended people in their lives. What is missing is the opportunity to personally reflect on what is meaningful to them and have someone who understands how to take this knowledge to the next level. This is where Dr. Tammy comes in. Having worked in private industry in many different roles, fields and companies along with her 20 year career in academia helping guide students, give her the unique ability to provide meaningful advice to students.
