Where can they find guidance on deciding whether to pursue graduate school?
What support is available for navigating complex college pathways or exploring new academic interests?

Key Takeaways
Why Students Need Better Guidance
There is a dire shortage of high school counselors all across the US. In California, there is roughly 1 advisor to 450 students. This means that in a high school with enrollment of 900 students, there are 2 advisors. In a high school of 1800 students, there are 4 advisors.
Higher education advisors at all levels are highly overworked and are focused on advising students in the department they are assigned. This means that these advisors are subject matter specific. So for example, an advisor in the Math Department only advises on matters relating to Math. Should a student want to change majors or transfer schools, there is little to no advisement available.
Higher education institutions are also companies, which means there is no incentive for them to provide adequate advisement support for students. Colleges and universities are driven by enrollment which equals revenue. The longer a student is enrolled, the more money they make.
The exorbitant number of degrees and certificates offered at higher education institutions is overwhelming for most students. Sometimes there is a strategy used by college admission counselors for a student to choose a major just to gain admission. Or there’s the case when a student gains acceptance as undeclared. There then exists no one to help a student find their true pathway.
Not all college degrees and certificates lead to employment nor were they created for that reason. Higher education institutions many times create degrees and certificates to increase enrollment (i.e., revenue) often times with no consideration on how these degrees and certificates prepare students for careers.
Not every student needs a college degree, but who will guide students on other options? We have lost focus on how valuable vocational education is. Most students need a skill that translates to getting a job no matter where that skill is learned. However, most high schools provide no guidance on career interests, which then translates to confusion once students graduate from high school.
Given the right guidance, a college or vocational education is attainable for everyone. As is, believe it or not, a private college/university education. However, so many qualified students do not apply to schools, programs, degrees and certificates because of the lack of understanding of the offerings and lack of adequate advisement.
