From College to Career

Explore The Pathways

Pathway 1

Reflection

What are your personal interests? Things you’re involved in? And what do you consider to be your personal strengths? How can this information help guide your decisions on a college major and future career?

In the Reflection Pathway, these questions will be explored and information presented to help you hone in on potential college majors and future careers. Various tools and resources will be used to assist you in this exploration. Once your interests and strengths are identified, college majors at colleges of interest are then explored and how they lead to meaningful careers.

Deliverable - A document that outlines your personal interests, strengths, future major options, and future career options.

Pathway 2

Navigation

I’ve chosen a college major - now what? Do I want to study abroad? Are there financial limitations that drive a need to graduate on time? Do I want to explore work study opportunities (resulting in graduating a bit later)?

Once you have chosen a college major, the Navigation Pathway provides support to create a comprehensive term-by-term plan that meets your goals. You will explore your major’s degree requirements and choose the coursework that fulfills the requirements, while making sure to identify relevant prerequisites that drive sequencing for each term. Since making mistakes in course scheduling results in spending extra money and the delay of completion, having a well thought out and executed plan will avoid making such mistakes and will build in options should courses not be available during a specific term.

Deliverable - A document that outlines your term-by-term plan identifying prerequisites and sequencing along with viable backup options.

Pathway 3

Implementation

Do you want to transfer to a new degree program? Are you attending community college and want to transfer to a 4-year college? Are you attending a 4-year college and want to transfer to another? Or are you working and want to explore a new career either via returning to college or initiating a new job search?

Dr. Tammy has helped numerous students with making successful transfers and pivots.

The Pivot Pathways provides a flexible option to construct a customized plan just for you. Dr. Tammy can work with you to create a customized package from the deliverables from Pathways 1 - 3. Or if you choose additional education, she can provide options such as extension courses or certificates. If those aren’t relevant, she can assist with graduate school options by helping you find programs and/or assist with your applications.

Here are a few examples. You could choose to go to the Reflection Pathway in order to reassess your personal interests and skills. Or you could go the Transition Pathway where you would redo your resume and/or LinkedIn profile and get advice on how to write effective cover letters. Or Dr. Tammy could suggest alternative options for furthering your education or career options. Regardless of how you want to pivot, a customized plan will be created that aligns with your goals.

Deliverable – Determine options for transfer or career pivot. Choose relevant deliverables from Pathways 1 – 3 for a customized plan.

Pathway 4

Transition

Do you have a resume, cover letter, or LinkedIn profile? What if you’ve never worked–how do you create these? A major Catch 22 - how do you get a job that requires experience when you don’t have experience?

Dr. Tammy helps her clients develop and refine job search skills to acquire an internship or entry-level career. She has many proven ideas on how to effectively develop your resume and LinkedIn profiles, and examples of effective cover letters that have led to clients acquiring interviews. One of her strengths is that she knows how to creatively build a resume and LinkedIn profile to students who have had little to no working experience. Additionally, she feels that everyone can benefit from having a knowledgeable, objective person assist with the creation of their resume and LInkedIn profile. She has proven methods to acquiring relevant information that when presented correctly makes a strong resume and LinkedIn profile.

Additionally, she understands how to use resources such as LinkedIn and other job boards to effectively find open job opportunities. She also instructs students how to utilize the resources available at the career center at either their community college or 4-year college. One of the weaknesses of these centers is that the majority of career counselors have no experience in getting a job in private industry (navigating the job search in academia is quite different), and those who are competent are typically overworked and have large student loads. This necessitates having someone like Dr. Tammy to help students most effectively find internships and entry-level positions in this global, competitive world.

Deliverable – Create/update resume, cover letter and LinkedIn profile. Participate in a mock interview with constructive interview tips.
